Some days, I call my daughter multiple times just to hand her a phone charger. But it is never about the task itself. It’s my playful way of checking in, sharing a laugh, and keeping our day a little more fun and connected.
Here is how it plays out on a typical day!
Me: Bunmiiiii
Her: Yes, Mom
Me: Plug in my phone for me, please
Her: Urgh, the charging point is next to you
Me: Don’t you know this is what African parents do! Young lady, next, you will bring the TV remote 😅
Her: You are being lazy, this is not about what African parents do
Me: I am allowed to call you whenever I want, multiple times a day (meanwhile, I am still pressing my phone)
Her: Are you going to give me the phone or make me wait till you are ready to plug it in?
Me: Just hold on, I am almost done
Her: Sighssss!
Me: You can plug it in now, here.
Her: Your cord isn’t here
Me: It is right there, I never take it out of there
Her: It is not there (screaming in her head, I am sure)
Me: Look there, oh, it isn’t. (Looks to my left), Oh, it is right here in the power bank
Her: Just let me have it.
Me: Thank you 🥰
Her: Don’t call me again
Me: You wish! Hahaha
Her: This is not funny
Me: It very much is.
Am I the only one who does this?
Mind you, I am not calling her because I need her to do the task for me, I call her like that to check on her, to make her walk to me while I am working. For me, it’s more of a wake-up call in the middle of the day to keep her on her toes, kinda call, not a malicious one.
If you do this to your kids, why do you do it?
